Hasta Luego Isla Mujeres
Well, we were blown out again by high winds. But we had three days of success with the sailfish, and I’m extremely thankful for that. This was definitely a challenging trip. Out of eight days, we had only a few chances to interact with the sailfish, and it all happened very quickly. Even so, the encounters we did have were very special. It was wonderful to see a top predator hunting in...

Two days, no fish
Yesterday it was too windy even consider getting out on the water. Our estimate was 30 knots of wind speed. And today, we saw no birds out on the water, and no fish. But we did manage to make it out to the spectacular late classic Maya ruins of Chichen Itza. I have yearned to visit this site since seeing photos of it as a child, so it was wonderful to have an opportunity to walk around this...

Islas Mujeres Day 4
We were back in the thick of it today, with another series of great sailfish encounters. At this rate, with success on three out of four days so far, we’re batting .750 which is pretty unreal. We were able to jump in with several good size...

A day of looking and not finding
Well, our luck had to run out sometime I suppose. After six hours of searching for baitball activity to no avail, we finally had to pack it in and come home. The ocean is huge, and we are looking for a needle in a haystack. But more than that, it really seemed like the bait fish did not behave the same way as we had seen the previous two days. They were staying deeper, and avoiding being driven to...

Sailfish Day 2
It’s been a phenomenal trip here to Islas Mujeres, Mexico with Eric Cheng and Tony Wu, to photograph the Atlantic Sailfish. We’ve had phenomenal encounters with these incredible hunters, as they corral baitballs until every last fish is eaten. The visibility has been murky at times, and the sky overcast which makes for difficult photography underwater. But so many people I know who...
